Probiotics Can Benefit Loneliness and Mood

As the song goes, “one is the loneliest number.” A nationwide survey taken this year found that nearly half the country experiences periods of feeling alone and isolated.

Loneliness involves being cut off from others. Frequently, this type of isolation leads to feelings of profound sadness. Both the physical and emotional effects that result are indications that loneliness can be harmful to overall health.

  • Researchers found that people who are socially isolated are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke

  • Isolation is associated with negative changes in the hormonal and immune systems

  • Loneliness decreases cognitive abilities and may promote the development of Alzheimer’s disease

  • Isolation, loneliness, and living alone can be as threatening to health as cigarettes, excess alcohol, and obesity.

  • Loneliness has an impact on mood and this poor state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with other people

Reversing the Trend

But it is not all doom and gloom. There are basic steps that can be taken to increase social interaction and support health:

  • Spend time with others: A social support network that includes friends, family, and peers helps to reduce isolation

  • Physical activity: People who say they get just the right amount of exercise are considerably less likely to be lonely

  • Sleep: Researchers found that sleep deprivation makes people feel lonelier

  • Reduce stress: Do everything possible to reduce financial stress, workplace pressure, family obligations, and more since these can all take a toll on quality of life and mood

Mood Support from Probiotics

We all know that stressors in today’s world are constant. Whether you work full-time, are a stay-at-home parent, a caregiver, or student, the day-to-day stresses of life can affect mood and well-being. Loneliness makes coping with stress so much more difficult.

Adding probiotics to your daily regime can help promote emotional well-being and a positive state-of-mind.

It may be difficult to believe that by altering the bacteria in your gut, you can better handle stress and improve your mood, but it’s true! Emerging science shows a link between gut and brain health. In fact, numerous studies confirm probiotics (live bacteria that keep the digestive system healthy), have a positive effect on mood and stress-related disorders.

In a landmark study, results revealed that the intake of probiotics may help reduce negative thoughts associated with sad mood.

Using a probiotic will help ease digestive discomfort associated with stress, as well as support positive mood balance, and more effectively cope with stressful situations.
